Your target clients and industries

Different freelancing platforms cater to different types of clients and industries.

For example, if you’re targeting clients in the creative industry, platforms like Fiverr or 99designs may be a good fit.

If you’re focusing on IT and tech-related projects, platforms like Upwork or Freelancermap may be more suitable.

Research and choose a platform that aligns with the type of clients and industries you want to serve.

Your budget and payment preferences

Freelancing platforms in Kenya have varying fee structures, such as commission fees, membership fees, or transaction fees.

Consider your budget and payment preferences when choosing a platform.

For example, if you have a limited budget, platforms with lower commission fees or no membership fees like Fiverr or Guru may be preferable.

If you prefer specific payment methods, ensure that the platform supports those methods.

Your availability and work schedule

Some platforms require freelancers to bid on projects or compete for gigs, which may require more time and effort.

Others may have more flexible arrangements, allowing you to set your own rates and work hours.

Consider your availability and work schedule when choosing a platform that suits your needs.

Tips for Creating a Winning Profile

PPH has over 1.5 million registered users.

So if you were to join this platform, you’d be going up against millions of other freelancers eyeing the same job as you!

So, how do you get an edge?

It comes down to who has an iconic profile.

To increase your odds of success, do the following.

a).  Showcase your skills and expertise

One of the best ways to stand out on freelancing platforms in Kenya is to showcase your skills and expertise.

This involves creating a professional profile that highlights your unique selling points, including your experience, education, and any certifications or awards you may have earned in your field.

To further support your credentials, consider sharing samples of your work or testimonials from past clients.

Another effective way to showcase your skills is by taking advantage of the platform’s skill tests.

These tests evaluate specific technical abilities and provide potential clients with a quantitative assessment of your proficiency in various areas.

By achieving high scores on these tests, you can increase the likelihood of getting hired for jobs related to those skills.

Finally, don’t be afraid to establish yourself as an authority in your niche by publishing informative content related to what you do.

This could be in the form of blog posts, whitepapers or social media updates sharing interesting facts about what you do – this can go a long way towards building trust with potential clients who are looking for someone they can rely on for quality work.

b). Highlight your achievements and past projects

As a freelancer, showcasing your achievements and past projects is crucial in building trust with potential clients

It gives them an idea of your skills, experience and level of expertise.

One way to do this is by creating a portfolio that showcases your best work.

Include details about the project such as the client’s name, the scope of work, your role and responsibilities, and any measurable results achieved.

Another effective way of highlighting your achievements is by including them in your pitch or proposal when applying for freelance jobs on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr.

Use specific examples to demonstrate how you’ve helped other clients achieve their goals or solve their problems.

This makes you stand out from other freelancers and increases the likelihood of landing the job.

c). Use keywords and phrases relevant to your industry

This is because most clients use specific terms related to their industry when posting job opportunities on freelancing platforms.

For instance, if you are a writer looking for writing jobs, you should use keywords such as “content creation,” “blogging,” “copywriting,” and “SEO writing” among others.

By doing so, you increase the chances of your profile being discovered by potential clients looking for writers.

Using relevant keywords and phrases also helps you stand out from other freelancers in your field.

It shows that you understand the industry’s jargon well and are familiar with the particular needs of clients seeking your services.

As a result, clients will be more likely to hire you since they can easily identify what sets you apart from other applicants.

d). Set reasonable rates and expectations

Many new freelancers in Kenya tend to underestimate their worth and set low rates, which can lead to financial instability in the long run.

On the other hand, setting too high rates may lead to a lack of clients, leading to a drop in income.

Therefore, it is essential for freelancers to research industry standards and set competitive yet reasonable rates for their services.

In addition to setting reasonable rates, it is crucial for freelancers to manage client expectations effectively.

This includes establishing clear communication channels with clients from the start and providing accurate timelines for project completion.

By doing so, clients will better understand what they should expect from the freelancer throughout the project’s duration.

How to Find Freelance Jobs on the Platforms in Kenya

Besides polishing your profile, here are some strategies for finding and applying for freelance jobs on the platforms:

Use search filters to find relevant job postings

Most freelance platforms in Kenya have search filters allowing you to narrow your job search based on specific criteria such as job category, location, budget, and more.

Utilize these filters to refine your search and find job postings that are relevant to your skills and expertise.

This will help you save time and focus on opportunities that are more likely to be a good fit for you.

Customize your proposals to match the client’s needs and requirements

When submitting proposals for freelance jobs, make sure to personalize each proposal to address the specific needs and requirements mentioned in the job posting.

Avoid using generic templates and take the time to understand the client’s project and offer tailored solutions in your proposal.

This shows that you have taken the effort to understand the client’s needs and increases your chances of getting hired.

Use samples and portfolios to showcase your work

Freelancing platforms in Kenya often allow you to showcase your previous work samples and portfolios.

Take advantage of this feature to demonstrate your skills and expertise to potential clients.

Choose your best work that aligns with the type of projects you are applying for and make sure to highlight the relevant skills and achievements in your portfolio.

This helps clients evaluate your capabilities and gives them a better understanding of what you can offer.

Follow up on proposals and communicate with clients

Don’t just submit proposals and wait for a response.

Follow up with clients after submitting a proposal to express your continued interest in the project and to inquire about the status of your proposal.

Be professional and responsive in your communication, and address any questions or concerns that the client may have.

This shows your proactive approach and professionalism, which can set you apart from other freelancers.

Step 1: Identify Your Niche/Market

Step 1: Identify Your Niche/Market

Identifying your niche market is the first and most crucial step in starting an online business in Kenya.

Your business idea niche market refers to the specific group of people who have a common problem or need that you can solve through your products or services.

Before launching your business, it’s essential to research and identify which niche markets are underserved in Kenya.

To identify a profitable niche, follow these steps:

Decide What Kind of Products/Services You Will Sell

Once you have decided to start an online business in Kenya, the next step is to determine what kind of products or services you will sell.

Many different types of businesses can be started online, but choosing a niche that interests you and has demand is important.

One approach is to look at your own skills and interests and see if there’s a market for them.

For example, if you’re passionate about photography, you could start an online business selling your prints or offering photography services.

Alternatively, you could research popular niches and identify gaps in the market where there’s room for a new player.

It’s also important to consider the logistics of selling your product or service online.

Will it require shipping?

Will customers need to download something?

These factors can impact both costs and customer experience, so it’s important to plan ahead before launching your business.

Identify a gap in the market

Now that you have an idea of what niche/market you’d wish to serve, the next thing you need to do is to identify a gap in the market.

It is a crucial for any entrepreneur looking to start an online business in Kenya.

To do this, first, do thorough research on the current state of the online market and identify areas that are underserved or not yet tapped into.

This could involve analyzing existing businesses and their offerings, studying consumer behavior, and conducting surveys and focus groups.

Once a potential gap has been identified, validate it by testing out your idea with a minimum viable product or prototype.

This will help you gauge consumer interest and demand before investing significant time and resources into developing a full product or service.

Finally, once you’ve validated your concept, build a strong brand presence around your business in order to stand out from competitors.

This could involve creating compelling content across various social media platforms, optimizing your website for search engines, and engaging with customers through personalized messaging and customer service.

But we are getting ahead of ourselves.

Let’s see the next step to start an online business in Kenya.

Research your target audience

To start an online business in Kenya, first research your target audience.

This will help you determine exactly who you are catering to and what their needs and desires are.

One way to do this is through social media analytics.

By analyzing your social media followers, you can learn about their demographics, interests, and behavior patterns.

This works if you already have a social media audience.

But if you don’t, another way to research your target audience is by conducting surveys or focus groups.

This allows you to gather direct feedback from potential customers on what they want from a product or service like yours.

Another best way is researching competitors within your market.

This can provide valuable insights into what has worked for them and what hasn’t.

See, by taking the time to understand your target audience before launching your online business in Kenya, you can ensure that you are providing a product or service that meets their needs and stands out in the crowded digital marketplace.

So, once you clearly understand your target audience, evaluate the competition and identify what they are offering.

This will help you differentiate yourself by offering something unique that meets the needs of your target audience.

This could include mobile money platforms, such as M-Pesa, which are popular and widely used in Kenya, along with other online payment methods, such as credit/debit cards or cash on delivery, to accommodate different customer preferences.
  • Personalized Customer Service: Providing personalized customer service can be a USP for online businesses in Kenya. This could involve offering live chat support, personalized product recommendations, or customized offers based on customer preferences and browsing behavior, to create a personalized and engaging shopping experience.

This could involve allowing customers to customize products, such as clothing, accessories, or home decor, with their preferred colors, sizes, or designs, to create a unique and personalized shopping experience.
  • Virtual Try-On or Augmented Reality (AR) Shopping: Providing virtual try-on or AR shopping experiences for products like clothing, eyewear, or beauty products can be a USP for online businesses in Kenya. This can allow customers to virtually try on products and see how they look before making a purchase, enhancing the online shopping experience and reducing returns.

Besides registration, to start an online business in Kenya, obtain the necessary licenses and permits to operate legally.

This process can vary depending on the nature of your business and its location.

You should research the specific requirements for your industry and location before beginning the application process.

Some common licenses and permits required for online businesses in Kenya include;

  • Business permit or license from the City Council
  • Single business permit
  • Tax compliance certificate

These are typically obtained from government agencies such as the County Council or Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

Additionally, if you plan to sell goods or services online, you may need to register for Value Added Tax (VAT) with KRA.

Obtaining these licenses and permits may require filling out forms, providing documentation such as identification documents or proof of ownership of property used for your business operations, and paying applicable fees.

Step 3: Create Your Website

Step 3 Create Your Website in kenya

The next step to start an online business in Kenya is to build the platform.

There are two ways you can do this:

  • Use an existing platform like Shopify, OLITT, or BigCommerce to run your online business in Kenya. This costs more and you don’t control
  • Build a platform you fully own.

Let me show you how to do that last one?.

Choose a domain name and web hosting service

A domain name serves as your website’s address on the internet, while web hosting refers to the storage space where your website’s files will be stored.

So, pick a domain name that is easy to remember and relevant to your business.

This makes it easier for potential customers to find you online.

Here are some examples of good and bad domain names for an online business that sells handmade soaps:

Good Domain Name:

  • BlissfulSoaps.com – This domain name is short, easy to remember, and reflects handmade soaps’ positive and luxurious nature. It also includes a relevant keyword “soaps” which can help with search engine optimization (SEO).

Bad Domain Name:

  • SoapSeller2021.com – This domain name is generic, lacks creativity, and includes numbers, which can make it harder to remember. It also doesn’t convey any unique selling proposition and doesn’t provide any indication of the type of products being sold.
  • CheapSoapEmporium.com – This domain name may imply low quality or discounted products, which may not be desirable for a business aiming to position itself as selling high-quality handmade soaps. It also includes a long and complex name, which can be difficult for users to type and remember.

Next, you need hosting.

This is where your business files like articles, product images, etc will live online.

When selecting a web hosting service, consider factors such as uptime reliability, speed, and security features.

They will handle all aspects of developing your site from creating an online store if necessary to ensuring that it is SEO optimized.

In the end, choosing whether to design your website or hire a web developer depends on various factors such as budget constraints, technical skills or preferences for customization.

Understand what each option entails so that you make an informed decision when starting an online business in Kenya.

Step 4: Develop/Source Your Product/Service

Step 4 Develop Source Your Product Service in kenya

With the storefront website up and running, it is time to act on the insights you mined in step #1 on how to start an online business in Kenya.

Develop a pricing strategy

Your pricing strategy should be informed by various factors such as your target audience, competition, and cost of production.

Start by researching what your competitors charge for similar products or services to ensure you’re not undercharging or overcharging.

Consider the value your product or service delivers to customers and how much they are willing to pay.

Conduct market research to gauge customer preferences and willingness to pay. You can also offer discounts during the initial stages of operation to attract more customers.

Lastly, make sure that you consider all costs associated with running your online business such as website hosting fees, marketing costs, shipping fees (if applicable), and taxes when setting prices.

Here are some pricing model examples you can adopt:

  • Flat-rate pricing: This model offers a fixed price for a product or service, regardless of usage or consumption. It’s simple and easy to understand, but may not be suitable for businesses with varying levels of usage or consumption.
  • Tiered pricing: This model offers multiple pricing tiers based on different levels of features, usage, or customer segments. It allows businesses to cater to different customer segments and monetize based on usage or value delivered.
  • Subscription pricing: This model offers customers access to products or services for a recurring fee. It provides predictable revenue and encourages customer loyalty, as long as the value delivered justifies the recurring cost.
  • Freemium pricing: This model offers a basic version of a product or service for free, with premium features or functionality available at a premium price. It attracts a large user base with the free version and monetizes through premium upgrades.
  • Pay-as-you-go pricing: This model charges customers based on their actual usage or consumption of a product or service. It’s popular for products or services with variable usage patterns and provides flexibility to customers while aligning revenue with usage.
  • Bundled pricing: This model offers multiple products or services bundled together at a discounted price compared to buying them separately. It encourages customers to purchase more and can increase overall revenue.
  • Auction-based pricing: This model allows customers to bid on products or services, with prices determined by auction dynamics. It can generate higher prices for unique or rare items and create a sense of urgency among customers.
  • Loyalty-based pricing: This model offers discounts on checkout or special pricing to loyal customers or members of a loyalty program. It encourages repeat purchases and customer retention.

Develop a pricing model that ensures profitability without sacrificing competitiveness in the market.

Create a business plan

To start an online business in Kenya, you must create a comprehensive business plan outlining your vision, goals, and strategies.

A well-written business plan can help you secure funding from investors or lenders and guide your decision-making process as you build your business.

Your plan should include a detailed description of your products or services and information about your target market and competition.

In addition to outlining your product or service offering, your business plan should also include financial projections for the first few years of operation.

This will help you identify potential revenue streams and anticipate any expenses that may arise.

You’ll want to conduct thorough research on what it will cost to acquire customers and scale up operations over time.

Finally, make sure to outline the key performance indicators (KPIs) that you’ll use to track progress toward your goals.

These could include metrics like website traffic, conversion rates, customer acquisition costs (CAC), customer lifetime value (CLV), and more.

Step 5: Marketing and Sales Strategy

how to start online business in kenya Step 5 Marketing and Sales Strategy

To start an Internet business in Kenya, you need more than a business plan.

Develop a marketing plan

This is crucial to ensure your products or services are visible and accessible to potential customers.

The first step towards creating a marketing plan is identifying your target audience.

You need to research and understand the demographics of your potential clients, such as age, gender, location, interests, and needs.

The second step is defining your unique selling proposition (USP).

This is what sets you apart from competitors and attracts customers to choose your product/service over others.

Once you have defined your USP, you can then determine the appropriate marketing channels that will help reach your target audience effectively.

These channels may include social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, email newsletters or blogs.

Lastly, it’s essential to measure each marketing strategy’s effectiveness by regularly analyzing sales data or website traffic statistics.

This will enable you to make necessary changes if some strategies are not working as expected or shift focus on effective ones for optimal results.

In short, put together what you’ve gathered thus far and figure out how to actualize it!

That’s your marketing plan!

Identify your sales channels

Another one of the critical steps when starting an online business in Kenya is identifying your sales channels.

You will use these platforms to reach your target audience and sell your products or services.

In Kenya, some common sales channels for online businesses include your social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Another popular sales channel is e-commerce marketplaces like Jumia, Kilimall, and Masoko.

These platforms offer a ready market with established customer bases that can help new businesses gain traction quickly.

Some online businesses may choose to set up their websites where they can sell directly to customers or use affiliate marketing programs to promote their products on other sites.

As you identify your sales channels, consider factors such as cost-effectiveness and the potential reach of each platform.

Researching what works best for similar businesses in your niche can also help guide you in making informed decisions about which channels to prioritize.

Determine your conversion strategy

A conversion strategy refers to the process of converting website visitors into customers.

It involves a series of steps that guide a potential customer from being aware of your product or service to making a purchase decision.

Some effective conversion strategies include offering free trials or demos, providing valuable content on your website, and creating compelling calls-to-action.

To develop an effective conversion strategy for your online business in Kenya, you need to understand your target audience’s needs and preferences.

Conduct market research to identify what motivates them to make purchases and tailor your approach accordingly.

Also, ensure that your website design is user-friendly, mobile-responsive, and easy to navigate.

This will help increase conversions as users are more likely to engage with a site that provides them with a seamless experience.

  • Personalized Recommendations: Leveraging user behavior and preferences data, online businesses can provide personalized product recommendations to users, increasing the likelihood of conversion. This can be achieved through algorithms, machine learning, or customer profiling, and can be displayed on product pages, in shopping carts, or through email marketing.
  • Social Proof: Reviews, testimonials, and ratings from satisfied customers can help establish trust and credibility for an online business. Displaying social proof prominently on product pages or using social media influencers to endorse products can positively impact conversion rates.
  • Email Marketing Campaigns: Building an email list and sending targeted email marketing campaigns can be a highly effective conversion strategy. Offering exclusive discounts, promotions, or personalized recommendations through email can help re-engage users and lead to conversions.
  • Live Chat Support: Providing live chat support on the website can help address customer concerns, provide real-time assistance, and increase trust. This can lead to higher conversion rates as users feel more confident about their purchase decisions.

Step 6: Payment and Shipping Options

Step 6 Payment and Shipping Options in kenya

You are almost done.

To this point, you’ve identified the products and have a running online business platform in kenya.

Set up payment and shipping methods

To do this, pick the best option that suits both you and your eCommerce customers in Kenya.

One of the most commonly used payment methods is M-PESA, available to anyone with a mobile phone.

Other popular options include PayPal, Visa/Mastercard payments through bank transfer or credit cards.

Ensure that you have secure payment options in place and that your customers are comfortable using them.

When it comes to shipping companies in Kenya, there are several reliable options available.

Some of the most popular ones include G4S, Matatu saccos, and Wells Fargo.

Each has its strengths, so choose what works best for your business needs.

Before selecting a shipping company make sure they can deliver on time and their pricing suits your budget.

Step 7: Launch and Grow Your Business

Step 7 Launch and Grow Your Business in Kenya

Launch your website

There’s nothing much here.

The final step to start an online business in Kenya is launching!

Set a date and build a buzz towards it. You can get help from influencers (this will cost you money).

Besides that, optimize your website for search engines (SEO).

Use relevant keywords in your content and meta descriptions to help improve your ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Additionally, ensure that your website loads quickly by optimizing images and reducing file sizes.

Once launched, promote your website!

  • Share links to your site on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as through email marketing campaigns.
  • Invest in paid advertising such as Google Ads or Facebook Ads to increase visibility and drive traffic to your site.

Monitor your website analytics

It helps you track the performance of your website and understand your audience’s behavior.

With analytics, you can identify areas that need improvement and make data-driven decisions to grow your business.

One important metric to monitor is website traffic- the number of visitors who come to your site.

You can use tools such as Google Analytics, which provides detailed reports on how people are interacting with your website.

You can also track where they’re coming from, what pages they view, and how long they stay on each page.

Another crucial metric is bounce rate – the percentage of visitors who leave after viewing only one page.

A high bounce rate usually indicates that something isn’t working well on your site, whether it’s slow loading times or poor content quality.

Monitoring this metric regularly helps you identify problems quickly and take action to improve user experience on your site.

Continuously improve your website and marketing strategies

This means that you need to constantly evaluate your website’s performance and make changes as necessary.

This could include updating your site’s design, improving its functionality, or optimizing it for search engines.

Another key aspect of improving your online business is to continually refine your marketing strategies.

Whether you’re using social media advertising, email marketing, or content marketing, it’s critical that you track the success of each campaign and adjust accordingly.

You might find that one strategy works better than others for reaching your target audience or generating leads.

#9 Best Pay Per Click Affiliate Programs In Kenya

Are you looking for ways to monetize your website or blog?

Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is a great way to do so.

PPC affiliate programs in Kenya can be highly profitable, and many different options are available.

In this article, we will explore the best PPC affiliate programs in Kenya so you can make an informed decision about the right program for you.

What is Pay Per Click (PPC) Program?

Pay Per Click (PPC) Program is an online advertising model that drives website traffic.

It is a marketing strategy that involves placing ads on search engine results pages, social media platforms, and other relevant websites.

As the name suggests, advertisers only pay when someone clicks on their ad.

PPC programs are one of the most effective ways of increasing website traffic and generating business leads.

In Kenya, several Pay Per Click affiliate programs are available for publishers to join and earn money through advertising.

These programs offer competitive commission rates ranging from 10% up to 50% per click or sale generated through the publisher’s website.

Some of the best Pay Per Click affiliate programs in Kenya include Google AdSense, Ezoic, Mediavine, among others.

How is it different from other types of affiliate programs?

Pay Per Click (PPC) affiliate programs are popular among bloggers and website owners who want to monetize their online presence.

Unlike other types of affiliate programs in Kenya, PPC offers a unique way for affiliates to earn money by simply driving traffic to the advertiser’s website.

In essence, an affiliate is paid each time someone clicks on an ad that appears on their site.

What sets PPC apart from other affiliate programs is that it doesn’t require the user to make a purchase in order for the affiliate to get paid.

Instead, they only need to click on the ad and be directed to the advertiser’s website.

This makes it an attractive option for smaller websites or those that don’t have high conversion rates.

Another advantage of PPC affiliate programs is that they offer more control over which ads appear on your site.

This means you can choose ads that are relevant to your audience and align with your website’s content, which can result in higher click-through rates and ultimately more revenue generated through clicks.

So, while many different types of affiliate programs are available, PPC offers distinct advantages for those looking for an easy and potentially lucrative way to monetize their online presence.

Outbrain

outbrain program in kenya

Outbrain is a native advertising company that uses targeted advertising to recommend articles, slideshows, blog posts, photos or videos to a reader.

Some of the content recommended by Outbrain link to publisher’s own content, while others link to other sites.

Outbrain helps businesses promote their products and services on the open web via native ads, or “recommendations”.

It helps publishers drive traffic to their websites and earn money from visitors who click on and engage with Outbrain ads on their sites.

When a user clicks on an Outbrain ad, the publisher earns revenue from the click.

Outbrain’s algorithm is designed to optimize for user engagement, which means that the more users engage with the content, the more money the publisher can earn.

  • URL: Outbrain sign-up
  • Traffic requirements: 3 million monthly visitors (Oops?)
  • RPM: Up to $10
  • Referral program: No
  • Payment threshold: US$50
  • Payment frequency: Net 60 or Net 90

So which one should you choose?

When deciding which pay-per-click (PPC) affiliate program to choose in Kenya, there are a few factors to consider.

Firstly, you need to evaluate the potential return on investment (ROI) – how much commission can you earn per click or sale?

Look for programs offering high commissions and a good reputation for paying out on time.

Secondly, consider the niche or industry that the program operates in. Is it relevant to your target audience?

If not, it’s unlikely that your readers will be interested in clicking through and making a purchase.

Finally, take into account any terms and conditions of the program.

Some may have strict rules around advertising methods or require exclusivity agreements.

Make sure you’re comfortable with these restrictions before committing to a particular PPC affiliate program.

In the endl, choosing the right PPC affiliate program can greatly enhance your earning potential as an affiliate marketer in Kenya

And by carefully considering ROI, niche relevance, and program requirements, you’ll be able to make an informed decision that maximizes your profits while providing value to your audience.

Setting Up Your Jumia Affiliate Program Account

Once accepted, you will receive a confirmation email.

Then you can just log in and start promoting products to earn online with Jumia in Kenya.

But before you can fully get down to business, there are a couple of things you need to take care of.

a. Add Your Information

Adding your information is a crucial step when joining the Jumia affiliate program in Kenya.

Once you’ve been accepted into the program, you need to log into your account and complete your profile by filling in all the necessary details.

This includes providing your personal information such as name, email address, phone number, and physical address.

And a link to your website or social media profile (if you didn’t as you were signing up).

b. Linking Your Payment Method

After signing up, you will need to link your preferred payment method to receive payments for the commissions earned from promoting Jumia products.

The process is simple and straightforward.

Firstly, log in to your affiliate account dashboard on Jumia’s website and navigate to the “Account Details” section.

Under the ‘INFO’ section, provide your TAX ID, which can be your National ID then save changes.

In the ‘ADDRESS’ section, key in your address. This is where you live.

Finally, under the ‘Payout Details,’ you can select from a variety of payment methods available depending on your preference.

In Kenya, popular options include M-Pesa and bank transfers.

Next, enter your payment details accurately as requested by the platform.

You may be required to provide additional information such as bank account numbers or SWIFT transfer codes where applicable.

Once done, all commissions earned will be automatically paid out through this linked method on a regular basis according to their payout schedule.

Promoting Your Affiliate Links in Kenya

The next step is to start promoting products on Jumia to earn commissions.

Here’s how.

a. Choosing Products to Promote

When it comes to earning through the Jumia affiliate program in Kenya, one of the most important steps is choosing the products you want to promote.

With thousands of products available on the Jumia platform, it can be overwhelming to decide which ones are right for your audience and will generate sales.

To start, consider your niche or area of expertise.

For example, if you run a fashion blog, you may want to focus on promoting clothing and accessories from Jumia’s fashion category.

Or if you have a cooking website, you could promote kitchen appliances and ingredients from Jumia’s grocery section.

Another factor to keep in mind when choosing products is their popularity and demand among your audience.

Look for items that are trending or have high ratings and reviews on Jumia’s website.

Additionally, pay attention to seasonal trends or upcoming holidays that may influence buying habits.

Ultimately, selecting the right products to promote on Jumia can greatly impact your success as an affiliate marketer in Kenya.

Take the time to research and choose wisely based on your niche and target audience’s interests and needs.

b. Generating Links

Once you’ve decided on the products to promote, the next step is to generate links.

Here, you are essentially inserting your affiliate ID into the product URL to make it trackable.

Now, there are two ways to generate affiliate links on Jumia and I will explain both.

#1. Offers

This can be found under the Advertising tab on your KOL dashboard.

With this type, you can pick links from provided categories and start promoting.

For example, to promote phones, look for phones category.

Click on it to open and then copy the URL.

Or share it directly to your Facebook account.

Also, you can shorten the link by checking the ‘Shorten URL’ box below the URL.

If scroll down, you will see a banner.

Click on the download button to download this banner.

And if you have a website, copy the Banner Code and paste it to any page you want this banner to appear on your website.

One more thing.

You can choose the size of the banner.

Some come with more sizes, while others only have one size available.

Pros of this method: your affiliate links are trackable in both the browser and the app. This means that when someone clicks on your links and buys on either the Jumia app or their internet browser, you earn.

Cons of this method: you cannot promote a specific product. This means that if I want to promote the latest Xiaomi Redmi 12C phone, I don’t have a choice but send the buyer the link to the entire phones category.

But there’s a way around this.

#2. Custom links

Can be accessed under Advertising >> Custom links.

Here’s how it works.

First, go to Jumia, find the product you’d wish to promote, and then copy the URL.

Come and paste the link you copied here?.

Then a trackable affiliate link will be automatically generated.

You can then copy or share it directly to your Facebook page.

Like Offers, custom links have both up and downsides.

The upside of using this method is that you can send someone to a specific product they wanted.

The downside is that this method is only trackable through the browser.

This means if you send someone a link generated through custom links and they buy right on the app, you won’t make anything.

Jumia says this is an issue they are working to resolve.

I guess we will wait and see.

Additional Tracking Parameters

I am sure you wonder what these boxes are for.

First, you don’t need them.

It is not a must to fill them.

But if you want to have a detailed report later, you can use this section to make that happen.

How?

  • Sub affiliate ID – use this section if you have someone else helping you promote the links. You can input their phone number as their ID. Later, it is easier to see whether their efforts actually resulted in a sale.
  • Channel – where are you promoting these links on? If you have a blog, input the name of your website here. If you are using Facebook, type Facebook. Now, here’s where this section comes in handy. Say I have two places I push my affiliate links; my blog and WhatsApp. I will generate two separate links for each channel and tag it appropriately. Later, when I get a conversion, I can see what channel gave me the sale.
  • Tracking tag – let me give you an example to understand this section. Say I have a blog, right. I have published a ton of posts and monetized using affiliate links, how do I know which posts makes me money? Here’s how. Just enter the post short title here. That’s just an example, I bet there are other ways to use Tracking tag.

c. Sharing Your Affiliate Links

Once you have generated the links, you need to promote them to earn.

To maximize your earnings, it is important to strategically share these links with your audience.

You can include them in product reviews, comparison articles, or top 10 lists related to the products available on Jumia.

It is also recommended that you disclose that these are affiliate links to ensure transparency with your readers or followers.

However, it is important not to spam or excessively promote these links as this may turn off potential customers and harm the reputation of both yourself and Jumia.

Instead, focus on providing valuable content and building trust with your audience so that they are more likely to click on and make purchases through your affiliate links.

One way I earn consistently through the Jumia affiliate program in Kenya is through niche websites.

These are blogs dedicated to specific topics.

For example, I have a website only dedicated to talking about headphones.

Here, I publish articles, reviews, and news about headphones in Kenya

And insert links to headphones on Jumia.

Having heard that, I know what you are thinking…

Must you have a website to earn through the Jumia affiliate in Kenya?

To become a Jumia affiliate in Kenya, you do not necessarily need to have a website.

While having a website can help promote products and increase traffic to your affiliate links, it is not mandatory.

You can still earn commissions by promoting Jumia products through social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

One way to do this is by sharing your referral link on your social media pages or groups.

This will allow people who click on the link and make purchases to earn you commissions.

Additionally, you can also write blog posts on other blogging platforms such as Medium or LinkedIn and include your referral link within the content.

So while having a website can be beneficial for promoting Jumia products as an affiliate marketer in Kenya, it is not necessary if you are creative in finding other ways to share your referral link and generate sales.

To track your earnings, log into your affiliate dashboard where you will find all the data regarding your sales and commissions.

In addition to tracking your earnings through the affiliate dashboard, you should also monitor the performance of each product.

Do this by using the additional tracking settings we talked about earlier.

This will allow you to identify which products are popular among customers and generate more sales.

You can then optimize your marketing efforts by promoting those products that perform better than others.

Finally, keeping track of any changes in commission rates or special promotions that may impact your earnings is important.

Tips for Succeeding in the Amazon Affiliate Program

It is one thing to join Amazon affiliate program in Kenya and another to start earning!

Here is what you need to do to start bringing in consistent income from Amazon Associates program!

Start a Niche Website

This is what everyone is doing actually!

Why?

Because it works!

A niche website involves creating a website that targets a specific group of people with unique interests, needs, or problems.

So instead of promoting everything on the Amazon website, you can create a website dedicated to cleaning tools and supplies.

How do you do that?

The first step in starting a niche website in Kenya is identifying your target audience and their interests.

You can choose any passionate topic and conduct thorough research to determine its profitability.

This means you look at the competition and whether you can beat them.

You should also consider the Amazon commission rates and size of an average order.

It doesn’t make sense to promote a $10 product and make 2%, does it?

Once you have identified your niche market, the next step is creating valuable content that will attract visitors to your site.

Your content should be informative, engaging, and tailored to meet the needs of your target audience.

You can use various formats such as blog posts, videos, podcasts or infographics to present your content.

Finally, monetize your niche website using Amazon product affiliate links.

Again, the work is in identifying the right niche.

Optimize Your Pages for Search Engines

Once you have a niche blog, one of the most important things you can do to increase its visibility is to optimize your pages for search engines.

This means making sure that your content is easily readable by search engine bots, and that you’ve included relevant keywords and phrases throughout your site.

To start, identify a primary keyword or phrase for each page on your site and ensure it appears in the title tag, meta description, headings, and body copy.

This means you need to do keyword research (identifying phrases people use when looking for products in your niche).

Another key factor in optimizing your pages for search engines is creating high-quality content that answers users’ questions and provides value.

Avoid keyword stuffing or duplicating content across multiple pages as this may negatively impact your rankings.

Instead, aim to create unique content that’s engaging and informative.

Finally, don’t forget about technical SEO factors such as mobile responsiveness, page load speed, and XML sitemaps.

These elements can greatly impact how well search engines crawl and rank your site.

And by implementing these optimization techniques in conjunction with other promotion strategies like affiliate marketing programs like Amazon Affiliate Program Kenya, you can significantly increase traffic to your website while also improving user experience.

Use Quality Content to Attract Potential Customers

This is worth repeating a million times!
